Golf Vols propel Tennessee back to California for NCAA championships

It’s not been the year that Tennessee golf expected when the fall season kicked off back in September. The lineups have been frequent to change and consistency has certainly not been present. But Brennan Webb and his team are headed back to La Costa to play in the NCAA Championships after qualifying in the NCAA Amherst Regional at Poplar Grove golf club.
“I think it’s just a sign of where the program’s gone,” Webb said. “This is an expectation that we have now and despite all the struggles we’ve had this year, it’s still something that we expect to be able to do every year. Obviously that’s probably not gonna be the case as there’s times when things happen but the expectation that we that we will be at the NCAA finals is just kind of where we’re at as a program right now.”
Freshman Christian Pardue was key during the three round event. He finished 17th at Even par which featured two sub 70 rounds by shooting 66 on day one and 68 during the final round. His opening round success was big on a day when Tennessee’s most established golfer, Lance Simpson, struggled out of the gate.
“I think that’s a sign of a good team when that can happen,” Webb said. “To have a five shot lead without counting Lance’s score just goes to show you the other guys stepped up and certainly Christian and Jackson (Herrington) as freshman, their first year at a regional to go out and get it done. This is a great sign for obviously this year, but certainly for the future as well.”
Tennessee will have three players who made the trip to Carlsbad last spring. The ability to know the course will be a help for Webb and company.

“I think it just helps the chatter for the next seven days just in preparation,” Webb said. “To have Lance and Bruce to be able to tell the other players what to look for and how to play certain holes, I think that’s just where the preparation helps it. Certainly it makes the practice round easier. You’re kinda rushing through one practice round and so it’s certainly gonna be an advantage for us to be have been out there last year. I haven’t really kinda looked at the scores yet today to see who else is making it but I think it’s just gonna be an advantage just have been there whether the golf course is as firm or not, it’s still going to be an advantage.”
It’s a Tennessee golf team that has renewed energy and that started at a poor outing at the SEC Championships.
“I think even just going into the week for whatever reason, I felt a new kind of refreshed revamped energy and that these guys felt like they were gonna get it done,” Webb said. “It was from the moment that we tapped in on that last disappointing round at the SEC championships. This is where our focus was and we only talked about how we were going back to San Diego and nothing was going to stop us and no other outside voices got inside that message and that was always the message. There was never any doubt from any of these guys that we were going to get the job done this week.”
