On Saturday, 2027 Liberty Christian (Texas) standout linebacker Cooper Witten got an offer from Tennessee. Cooper, the son of Tennessee Football legend, Jason Witten, detailed his reaction to the offer and more with Volquest.

Witten has been reaching out to several of Tennessee’s coaches as his recruitment has continued to pick up pace, as they are not allowed to reach out to him at this point in the recruiting process, and on Saturday, he got on the phone with Josh Heupel. The head coach let him know he had an offer to come play on Rocky Top.

“I didn’t really expect it much,” Witten said of if he expected the offer. “I have been reaching out to some of their coaches and talking, but I did not expect this today. The energy felt like it was going to come soon but not today.”

Heupel impressed Witten during the conversation with his energy and his message.

“He was super excited and had great energy about it,” Witten continued of the conversation with Heuplel. “I am just honored to receive. I am super excited and super pumped. All of my family are huge Tennessee fans, so of course, they are super pumped. It was just a huge blessing to receive this knowing how much the program has done for my dad and my family.”

Heupel was clear on what he liked about the standout defender’s game.

“He told me he really liked the effort I gave whether that is on special teams, playing linebacker or safety,” Witten said of Heupel’s message. “He really likes the way I play and the physicality I play with. Those are the main points he told me.”

Following the offer, Witten was able to have a good conversation with his dad, and there was plenty of excitement shared between the two.

“He was super pumped and excited for me,” the No.1 LB in the On3 Industry Rankings said. “All of my family really were too because they are all huge Tennessee fans. He just told me that he doesn’t want to pressure me to go there because he went there or all of that or because we have raised you to love the Vols growing up. He just said he wanted me to make the decision that was best for me, and it was great advice he gave me, but he was super pumped up and happy for me.”

As Cooper heads into his sophomore year, he has already earned all-state honors as a freshman and won a state championship last fall, but he wants to see his game continue to grow.

“I want to see it grow with my speed because college football is a different level of speed,” he said of this. “I feel like I just need to keep getting faster and improving. I think I have really good football awareness and IQ and can use that to my advantage and just keep getting faster and stronger.”

It is early in the process, but he is closing in on double-digit Power Four offers, and he knows what he will look for in a school.

“A school that will value me and tell me the truth,” he said of this. “One that will be intentional with our conversations. I am going to take it slow and see which schools I like the best or feel like want me the most and keep taking visits to see what schools I like and see gameday atmospheres to see what schools pull me in more and more.”
