(Caitie McMekin/News Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK) Tennessee's Boo Carter (23) warms up during a fall Tennessee football practice, in Knoxville, Tenn., Thursday, Aug. 8, 2024.

Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel said that sophomore Boo Carter was involved in Saturday’s scrimmage, the first scrimmage at Neyland Stadium of 2025 fall camp. The athlete has been a limited participant at times to begin fall camp while ‘checking some boxes’ in order to get back on then field for Tennessee.

“When we started training camp and I talked to you guys, there were steps that he had to take to continue to earn his place in the scope of what we’re doing as a football team,” Heupel said of Carter on Saturday. “He has taken those steps. He’s continued to grow. I like what he’s been able to do here, in particular the last four days. What’s going to transpire, it’s a day-to-day. We’re taking it day-to-day at this point, I guess is the best way to say.

“Boo was involved in what we’re doing (in the scrimmage).”

Carter returned to the Tennessee Football practice field with his teammates Tuesday morning, doing on-field work with the Vols for the first time in an open practice during fall camp. That continued throughout the week and into Saturday’s scrimmage for the Volunteers. The sophomore defensive back has been methodically working his way back to rejoining the team over the last week.

Carter missed offseason workouts and team activities in the lead-up to fall camp. He worked on the side with Tennessee staffers during the first two days of camp last week, then was back in a helmet for parts of last Saturday’s practice.

He addressed the team last Tuesday, before camp started Wednesday morning, then spent last Wednesday and Thursday afternoons visiting Children’s Hospital in Knoxville.

“Boo is a part of our team here,” Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said during his media day press conference. “There’s some things that he’s got to accomplish to get back on the field with us. Don’t have a set timeline on that.

“Our leadership council has been a part of those things, those discussions with me and with Boo. I’m proud of what they’ve done. They care and love Boo and want him to be his best too.”
