Liam Doyle earns SEC Pitcher of the Week accolade

Tennessee starting pitcher Liam Doyle was named the Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week Monday afternoon for his work in the program’s ninth no-hitter Friday night against St. Bonaventure.
The lefty was brilliant against the Bonnies, tossing the first 5.2 innings of clean baseball with 13 punchouts – one shy of a career-best. He allowed two base runners (both walks) that bookended his start. Doyle threw a season-high 104 pitches in the contest.
Tanner Franklin, Brandon Arvidson, Brayden May and Michael Sharman came on to finish the combined no-hitter for Tennessee on the night, the ninth in program history and the fourth combined no-no for the Vols. May’s efforts in the no-hitter came while making his first collegiate appearance.
Doyle leads the country with 47 strikeouts and has allowed one run off six hits in 20.1 innings pitched in four starts. He’s struck out 69 percent of the hitters he’s faced this season and secured 77 percent of his outs via the strikeout.
Second baseman Gavin Kilen picked up SEC Player of the Week honors following a five-homer week, including four in Houston at the Astros foundation College Classic last week.

Tennessee is coming off a week where it outscored its opponents 71-13. Five Tennessee pitchers teamed up to toss the ninth no-hitter in program history Friday night against St. Bonaventure. It was also the fourth combined no-hitter in team history and the first of any kind since 2002.
