Liam Doyle sets Tennessee single-season strikeout record

The All-American campaign for Tennessee pitcher Liam Doyle added another accomplishment Monday night during the Vols’ 11-6 win over Wake Forest in the Knoxville Regional Final.
Doyle became the program’s single season strikeout leader, surpassing Luke Hochevar in the eighth inning with strikeout No. 155. The lefty went on to punchout three more, bringing his total up to 158 on the season as he continues to lead the nation in then category.
Hochevar, who went on to become the No. 1 overall pick in the MLB Draft in 2006 after spending a year away from Tennessee playing independent baseball, set his strikeout record in the spring of 2005.
He now sits No. 2 on the list behind another lefty in Doyle. Jamie Bennett struck out 142 during the 1999 season. Former Cy Young award winner R.A. Dickey is fourth on the list with 137 punchouts back in 1996. James Adkins appears on the list twice, now as No. 5 and No. 6, with 135 (2005) and 133 (2007).
AJ Causey, who pitched for Tennessee last season, comes in at No. seven on the list with 125 punchouts in his lone season in the Orange & White.
Doyle entered Monday’s game in the seventh inning and stranded a man at second base, pumping 99 miles per hour past Kade Lewis. He ended up retiring all seven batters he faced in the ballgame with five strikeouts on 39 pitches.
