Tennessee ace Liam Doyle will face a suspension after it was made aware he was suspended in the 11th inning of Sunday’s completion of Game 2 between Tennessee and Auburn from Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Doyle tagged out Auburn’s Bristol Carter at the plate to end the inning. The base runner tried to steal home and was caught in a pickle between the bag and plate. The pitcher, who was covering home, applied the tag and words were exchanged.

It looked like the benches were about to be cleared, but credit the umpiring crew and both coaching staffs for making sure things didn’t escalate further.

When all the dust settled, Doyle was ejected from the ballgame. Carter, however, was not.

Per Southeastern Conference rules, since Doyle was a reliever at the time of his suspension, he is due a two-game suspension. If he were the starting pitcher (as he usually is) in the ballgame, his suspension would result in missing his next start.

Under this assumption, Doyle served the first game of his suspension in Game 3 on Sunday and will serve the second on Tuesday in a midweek against Indiana State.

All this pending the official umpire report that is to be submitted postgame. But, as it stands now, Doyle should be on track to make his next scheduled start on Friday against Vanderbilt. Of course, the Vols could elect to push back his start since they needed him out of the bullpen to finish the second game of the series.

It’s the first player to be ejected for Tennessee baseball since Blake Burke in nonconference action last season (2024) against Illinois. Drew Gilbert was also a recent toss, doing so in Super Regionals against Notre Dame in June of 2022.
