How it Happened: Marcus Phillips dazzles as Vols take 11-1 decision over Bonnies

Marcus Phillips had a career day on the mound and four different Vols drove in multiple runs at the plate as Tennessee ran away from St. Bonaventure 11-1 in seven innings Saturday night to secure the series-win from Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

Manny Marin walked it off in run-rule fashion with a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning. He had three hits in his return to the starting lineup. That makes it eight grand slams on the season in 15 games. The NCAA record is 14. The Vols blasted a Southeastern Conference record 12 a season ago.

The Vols (15-0) benefited from a Dean Curley two-run home run, a Dalton Bargo two-run single and a two-RBI day from Andrew Fischer. The Bonnies (7-6) led off the game with a Jayce Tharnish home run, but that was about it offensively for the club.  

Marcus Phillips (1-0) picked up his first-career win on the mound after another solid outing. The righty tossed a career-high 5.2 innings on the mound where he allowed just one run on three hits with five strikeouts to no walks. He finished the day with 85 total pitches (55 strikes).

Michael Salina (1-1) took home the loss for St. Bonaventure after surrendering three runs off three hits in three innings of his abbreviated start. He walked off the field gingerly in the third and did not return for the fourth.

Up Next: The Vols conclude the three-game series with St. Bonaventure on Sunday afternoon at 1 o’clock eastern time from Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
