Tennessee picked up another football commitment on Tuesday when New Jersey EDGE CJ Edwards made his pledge to the Vols. Tennessee was on him early and that stood out as they built relationships and he worked toward a decision.

“So being in a position I’m in with a lot of scholarships, I’m just blessed to be in that position,” Edwards said. “I’m been doing a lot of consideration with my family and we decided sort of just to make the decision early so I’m able to focus on my craft and just get to work. At the end of the day I want to be elite in college and I want to be especially elite during this upcoming season. Just get to work abd just make sure that I’m all set and I’m committed and I just put my best forward for the upcoming season.”

Tennessee was by to see him back in January with defensive line coach Rodney Garner, stopping by the school. Newly promoted OLB coach Levorn Harbin is the primary recruiter for Edwards and he is very fond of coach Chop.

“He recruits me hard and we are in communication almost every day  with messages of encouragement and motivation,” Edwards said. “He always communicating and we’re on the phone a lot. One of my biggest factors and where I want to go to college is their culture. If you have a desire to win are competitors then it fits that description. So he is a great person and a great coach and it’s just something I wanted to be part of.”

Then there is coach Josh Heupel. Their conversations have been good enough to let him know they have a very similar mindset.

“Like I said about the culture development piece, working on building there and the desire to compete,” Edwards said. “It’s a goal. To go get it and not be lackadaisical and laid-back. It’s to go for it all and go win that natty. I feel like I’d want to be a part of that competitive society, we have a similar mindset you know I want to be like minded people and I feel like coach Heupel is like me and one of those people. So I want to play under him.”

Edwards has never been to Tennessee but has talked with Tennessee enough and researched it that he felt comfortable in making this decision. He plans on coming down for spring practice in March and has his official visit to Knoxville set up for the last recruiting weekend in June. Edwards is long and has great size for someone who can rush the passer and defend the run. He feels like he brings a lot to the table.

“I feel like you know one of biggest things about my game is physical,” Edwards said.  “I’m a very physical person as well as a competitor and you know somebody that has a desire to win so hungry. Just a lot of good characteristics off the field. I’d say I’m a winner. I love to win at whatever I’m doing in life like the classroom, in the weight room nutrition wise, recovery wise so I feel like that’s my biggest plus is being a winner. On the field again, like I said typical hard player, hard worker that likes to get after it.”
