Tennessee returns home this week for a matchup with the top ranked Georgia Bulldogs. The crew from Volquest discussed the game in this week’s edition of the Rocky Top Roundtable.

“This Georgia team is playing their best football right now,” Brent Hubbs said. “I think they are the best team in the country. I don’t think they are as dominant as they have been the last several years but Tennessee has to play extremely well to make this a four quarter fight.”

Tennessee took the SEC’s top ranked rushing attack to Missouri, averaging 228 yards per game on the ground. The Tigers bottled the Vols up, holding them to just 83 yards rushing in the game and pretty much causing Tennessee to abandon the run for a big chunk of the second half. Being able to run it Saturday is paramount but the Vols haven’t had much success on the ground the last two years against Georgia.

“If you just look at Missouri you say no,” Rob Lewis said. “Georgia does have the top run defense in the SEC in conference games. But Missouri had 150 yards and Ole Miss had 180 yards. They didn’t just gash them but they found some stuff.”

Georgia comes into this contest with the SEC’s top rushing defense (an honor previously held by Tennessee before Missouri ran wild). The Bulldogs are giving up a league best 108 yards per game on the ground, but they’ve not been invincible. Which means hitting some chunk plays in the passing game is also a must.
