Tennessee has added former Oklahoma offensive coordinator Seth Littrell to the offensive staff Volquest has learned. Littrell and Tennessee head coach Josh Heupel have known each other since they played together at OU where Littrell served as a fullback on an offense quarterbacked by Heupel.

He served as head coach at North Texas from 2016-22, where he led the Mean Green to six bowl games and two Conference USA Championship appearances. He became the first UNT head coach to make bowl trips in each of his first three seasons and the first to produce consecutive nine-win campaigns since 1977-78.

Littrell had a short stint as the OC at Oklahoma serving in that role for just one season that saw an offense struggle to find identity and score with questions at the quarterback position. He was removed from his position in mid October.

“Seth is an all-time great Sooner,” Oklahoma coach Brent Venables said in a statement. “He has a deep love for this university and football program, and has poured his heart and soul into both. Despite that, our performance as an offense this season has not at all lived up to the OU standard and I felt a change was necessary now.”

Littrell, was set to earn $1.1 million in his first year in charge of Oklahoma’s offense in a contract that was set to run through the end of the 2026 season.

He had plenty of success as a play caller during his stint at North Texas. His units at North Texas ranked among the top three in Conference USA in total offense, passing offense and scoring offense for four consecutive seasons (2017-20), and led C-USA in rushing offense during the 2020 and ’21 seasons.

He has also had other coaching stints at Indiana and Arizona.

He will serve as another set of eyes and experience for Heupel and Vol offensive coordinator Joey Halzle after McKenzie Milton left his role as offensive analyst to join Scott Frost’s staff at UCF as quarterbacks coach.
