Tennessee baseball moves up in national polls following series-win in Oxford

Tennessee baseball moved up in the national polls this week after winning its fourth Southeastern Conference series of the season (third on the road) at previously-ranked No. 6 Ole Miss, two games to one, over the weekend.

The Vols (31-5, 11-4 SEC) ranked No. 2 in the country by Baseball America, No. 3 in the USA TODAY Coaches Poll, No. 4 from D1 Baseball and remained at No. 5 in the Perfect Game poll. At the time of this article, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has not updated thier poll.

Tennessee powered behind a career-day from Co-SEC Pitcher of the Week Liam Doyle and his 8.1 innings of 14 strikeout work in Tennessee’s 3-2 series-opening win over the Rebels on Friday. The Vols dropped game two 8-5 before rallying multiple times to come from behind and take the series from Ole Miss on Sunday, winning 10-8 thanks to some clutch two-run home runs.

Cannon Peebles was able to ignite the offense with a two-run shot in the sixth inning, which led to three more runs being scored in the frame. Reese Chapman’s two-run homer in the ninth put Tennessee ahead of for good.

According to D1 Baseball poll, the publication this website uses for baseball rankings, the Vols moved up one spot to No. 4 following the weekend. Texas took over as the new No. 1 team in the country with Arkansas sliding back to second. Clemson moved up a slot to No. 3 as well with Georgia jumping two spots to No. 5.

Oregon State and Florida State each moved up a pair of spots to No. 6 and 7, respectively, while Auburn moved three spots to eighth. LSU dropped six spots to No. 9 after being swept by Auburn and UCLA stayed put at No. 10 following a 3-1 week of play.  

Tennessee returns to action on Tuesday for a midweek tilt with Bellarmine. The Vols will also play host to Kentucky from Lindsey Nelson Stadium this weekend to continue conference play.
