Tennessee baseball is back atop the polls and ranked as the top-team in college baseball by three national publications following a perfect 3-0 weekend in Houston for the Astros Foundation College Classic.

The Vols (11-0) defeated Oklahoma State 5-2 on Friday, drilled Rice 13-3 on Saturday and handled Arizona 5- 1 on Sunday. The Cowboys were the preseason Big 12 favorites and the Wildcats were a preseason top-25 program. Both teams hosted regionals a season ago.

During the weekend of play, Tennessee tallied 45 strikeouts on the mound and launched 10 home runs from the plate.

The Vols are currently second nationally to East Tennessee State University (32) with 31 home runs and lead the country with 14.6 strikeouts per nine innings on the bump. The Tennessee staff also leads the country in ERA, hits allowed per nine innings, strikeout-to-walk ratio and WHIP while the offense in No. 1 in slugging percentage.

Vitello’s program picked up No. 1 rankings from Perfect Game and Baseball America this week. The USA Today Coaches Poll once again had Tennessee in the top-slot after moving the Vols up to No. 1 this time last week. D1 Baseball, the rankings this publication follows, moved Tennessee up to No. 2 in the country.

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has yet to release an updated top-25 poll.

LSU topped the D1 Baseball top-25 poll this week with a 5-0 record while Tennessee is second after going 4-0 on the week. Arkansas, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida State, Florida, Oregon State, Virginia and Oregon comprised the rest of the top-10 after each team moved up one spot in the rankings.

Texas A&M, who was previously ranked No. 1 by D1 Baseball, was the biggest loser of the week by dropping 13 spots following a nightmare of a week.

Tennessee returns to the friendly confines of Lindsey Nelson Stadium for the final week of nonconference action ahead of Southeastern Conference play beginning on March 14. The Vols will play host to Radford (Tuesday) and Xavier (Wednesday) in midweek action before welcoming St. Bonaventure this weekend for a three-game series.
