After landing its first couple of commitments of the offseason from the transfer portal this week, Tennessee adds another one as former Wichita State hurler Nate Snead has committed to Tony Vitello and the Volunteers.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-handed pitcher came out of the bullpen for the Shockers this past season as a true freshman, making 24 appearances with one start. Snead has a fastball that reached triple digits this past season and one that enabled him to strike out 53 batters with just 17 walks over 42.2 innings pitched. Opponents hit .230 against him as he finished the campaign with a 1-2 record and 3.16 ERA.

The South Milwaukee, Wis. native was named to the All-Freshman Team for the American Athletic Conference this past season and he’ll have three years of eligibility remaining. The freshman also logged three saves on the year.

Snead becomes Tennessee’s third addition from the transfer portal this offseason – joining former Jacksonville State right-handed pitcher AJ Causey and former NC State catcher/designated hitter Cannon Peebles. The window opened on May 30 and remains open for 45 days until July 13.

So far, the Vols have lost seven players to the portal, a list that includes pitchers Chase Burns, Jake Fitzgibbons, Hollis Fanning, Jacob Bimbi, Shawn Scott, Turner Swistak and outfielder Alex Stanwhich.

Last offseason, Tennessee was active in the transfer portal by adding key components to the roster who would go on to compete in the College World Series. Those players included shortstop Maui Ahuna, third baseman Zane Denton, outfielder Griffin Merritt and pitcher Andrew Lindsey.
