Tennessee running back Dylan Sampson might be bruised and battered, but he will be ready come Saturday when the Vols travel to Athens, Georgia.

Sampson’s toughness was on display in Saturday’s win over Mississippi State. Sampson set a career high in carries and yards in the Vols 33-14 win. Much of that work came after Sampson went to the locker room in the second quarter after suffering an ankle injury.

“This is what I signed me name on the line for coming out of high school so I think you have to just be real with yourself,” Sampson said. “If you can go be honest with your coaches and be honest with yourself. I felt like I was able to go. I communicated that and I played through it.”

Sampson, who it the 1,000 yard mark last week and went over 2,000 for his career has had a ball security issue fumbling in the first half the last three weeks.

“Each one have been different situations. You look at the film and see what you can do better. It’s tucking the ball away and not letting it be exposed. We will get that right.”

Defensively, this week is a different challenge. Mississippi State wanted to throw the ball over Tennessee’s head and make explosive plays. Georgia wants to be more balanced and play more physical in the run game. The result will be some one on one opportunities on the perimeter. It’s a challenge Jermod McCoy is preparing for.

“They (Georgia) didn’t play a terrible game but there’s some stuff that stuck out. We are locked into that and trying to take advantage of it and use it,” the cornerback said. “I think they have a receiver that’s pretty fast. They have a big body and then in the slot they have a shifty receiver too. It’s nothing we haven’t seen so we should be ready for it.”
