Snapshots: Vols go full pads in fall camp
Tennessee was back to work on Tuesday, this time in full gear as it was goal line/short yardage day for the offense and defense.
A season ago, Tennessee’s offense made real strides in 3rd and short and 4th and short compared to year one under Josh Heupel. The defense took strides as well on third down and in the redzone.
Tennessee’s defensive front has depth and experience as well as some youth who has made some noise early in fall camp. Meanwhile the offense is working towards answers in replacing Jerome Carvin and Darnell Wright, two mainstays over the last couple of years.
Tim Banks‘ defense has showed improvement year over year, but he has made it clear to everyone on his side of the ball that little from last year carries over into the 2023 season.

“For us, personally, we realize that what you did last year was last year,” Banks said. “I think at this point, we’re continuing to chop wood and carry water so to speak, to get ready for this upcoming season. From a confidence perspective, obviously that’s great. But, as I told the kids, experience is only good when you can go back and learn from it, whether it was good or bad. If we learn from it and build upon it, then it’s something that can become special. We can’t carry over any tackles. We can’t carry over any interceptions. We have to earn them again during camp, and that’s honestly the goal.”
For Tennessee to have a chance to do what they did last year overall, Banks’ defense must continue the progression it has made since his arrival and Tuesday that started in goal line, short yardage work.
Here are a few snapshots from Tuesday’s work.
