Tennessee tight end Ethan Davis working to make big strides this spring

Little by little, tight end Ethan Davis sees growth. Growth in his game which ultimately results in growth in playing time on the field as a Tennessee Vol.
“I feel really confident in my abilities to go out there and perform not only on Saturdays but during spring and in fall camp,” Davis said. “Part of that goes to Miles (Kitselman). He really really pushed me. He took me by his side and showed me it’s getting serious now, we need to take another jump beside the one I made last year. Just taking those gains I’ve made and growing even more off it.”
He has worked to get bigger and stronger. He has focused on becoming a better blocker and a more physical player. His ability to learn to play without the football and do the little things in the trenches could prove to be more pivotal to earning more playing time this season.
“It really more of a personal challenge for me,” Davis said. “I put on the weight but the strength wasn’t really there so now it’s been more focused on now you have the weight and make this weight strength stronger so you are able to hold your own in the box and stuff like that. It’s really been the main focal point of mine just to focus extra work outside the facility to focus on in the box work like my hands, feet and hat placement.”

Davis admits that you can’t go into the game with a soft mindset. It’s the best league in America but he also is quick to admit that his ability to block kept him off the field last season.

“I feel like in line was mostly my weakest point,” Davis said. “That’s really where I’ve tried to dial in and put all the details into that spot right there. I felt like off the ball I was able to hold my own running inserts and counters and stuff like that.”
Tennessee brought in two talented tight ends in Jack Van Dorselaer and Dasaahn Brame. They also feel good about redshirt freshman Cole Harrison. It’s a young and talented room with only so many game reps to go around. He is fully aware that he has to keep progressing because the others around him will be coming hard.
“I feel like and I said it before when they brought in Holden (Staes) and Miles last year, they are always going to bring in guys they feel like can be better than you,” Davis said of the motivation. “I just use that as fuel and use that as motivation to not only earn my spot but make sure it’s locked down.”
