How it Happened: Early offense carries Vols to 16-6 run-rule victory for sweep of Bowling Green
For the third-straight game in the series, Tennessee run-ruled Bowling Green following the 16-6 final in seven innings Sunday afternoon at Lindsey Nelson Stadium. With the win, the Vols have picked up their 13th nonconference home sweep since the start of the 2020 campaign and extended the win-streak to 10 games.
Tennessee (11-1) plated four runs in the first and five more in the second inning to jump out ahead early. Colby Backus walked it off for the run-rule win for the second time in the series as his run-scoring double down the left field line won it for the Vols in the bottom of the seventh. Bowling Green (2-7) plated six runs in the second inning on six hits in the entire ballgame.
Kirby Connell (1-0) picked up his first win of the season after working out of a two-on, no-out jam in the third. Calvin Mitchell (1-2) is the losing pitcher in the game after allowing four runs off five hits in just one inning of work.
Tennessee returns to Lindsey Nelson Stadium on Tuesday against Kansas State, but first – here’s how it all went down in this one for the Vols in a series-sweeping Sunday at home.
