Tony Vitello reacts, updates Chris Stamos injury against High Point
Tennessee left-handed pitcher Chris Stamos exited Tuesday’s 7-4 win over High Point with one out in the top of the fifth inning after a brief conversation with Jeff Wood, the program’s associate director of sports medicine, on the mound.
Following the contest, skipper Tony Vitello gave an update on the injury
“That was a deal where we were going to make a change no matter what, so I let Woody (trainer Jeff Wood) go out there and assess the situation and then the guy coming in gets as much time as he wants to warm up, for anyone that was watching,” the coach said. “But the arm was fine, I think. I think his forearm was a little sore or maybe bicep. But Woody went through some things and hopefully all things stay the same.
“But I think some soreness and some tightness in there from a guy that is interesting. He wasn’t sandbagging on us in scrimmages but you guys were at scrimmages and you guys are now at games and I think you all would agree with me, he’s a different competitor on game day which is great.”
The lefty just completed a 2-1 pitch to Panthers designated-hitter Charlie Klingler when the pause in action occurred. Fellow southpaw Andrew Behnke was eventually called from the Tennessee bullpen to take his spot.
Stamos has already made his presence known this season out of the Tennessee bullpen and has been one of the better transfer portal additions of the offseason to date. He was making his fourth appearance of the year against the Panthers on Tuesday and entered the ballgame having already thrown six innings of two-run baseball, allowing one hit with five strikeouts and three walks.
