How it Happened: Tennessee mashes its way to 17-9 series-sweeping victory

It was a Sunday afternoon that experienced a combined 26 runs on 23 hits, but the Volunteers once again came out victorious over the Gonzaga Bulldogs, winning 17-9. The win caps a three-game sweep for Tennessee who extended its win-streak to 11 games.

The Vols (11-2) saw Bryce Jenkins (1-0) pick up his first career win on the mound, allowing one run and one hit over the course of 1.2 innings pitched as the first man out of the bullpen for starter Drew Beam in the fifth. Nate Deschryver (0-2) takes home the loss for the Bulldogs (1-10) after surrendering three runs on two hits in two innings of work.

Scoring Summary

Top 3rd: Connor Coballes and Savier Pinales singled to begin the frame. Later, Brian Kalmer singled to bring in Coballes. With Tommy Eisenstat fouled out, but Pinales tagged up from third base to score the second run of the inning.

Bottom 3rd: Christian Moore singled and Blake Burke walked to kickoff the frame. Zane Denton followed to load the bases with no outs. Jared Dickey launched a grand slam over the right field wall. Griffin Merritt walked. Dylan Drieling flew out to deep center. Kyle Booker then doubled to left field to put runners at second and third base. Cal Stark popped out to second. Maui Ahuna doubled to right to bring in both runners. Christian Moore followed with a two-run blast to center field. Blake Burke was then hit – prompting the ejection of the Gonzaga pitcher. Zane Denton flied out to end the inning.

Top 4th: Brock Bozett singled with one out. Donovan Ratfield doubled behind him. Connor Coballes drove in Bozett on a sacrifice fly for the third run of the day.

Bottom 4th: Jared Dickey walked. Griffin Merritt drove him in with a two-run home run. Dylan Drieling struck out. Kyle Booker singled through the right side. Cal Stark flied out and then Maui Ahuna struck out to end the frame.

Top 5th: A fielding error allowed Enzo Apodaca to reach first to start things off. Brian Kalmer homered to right field.

2 R, 1 H, 1 E, 0 LOB – Score: Tennessee 10-5

Bottom 6th: Griffin Merritt walked and Hunter Ensley followed with a single to right field. Kyle Booker flied out. Cal Stark walked. Maui Ahuna drove in Merritt on a sacrifice fly to deep center. Christian Moore lined out to end the inning.

Top 7th: Brian Kalmer homered for the second time on the day – third time over the weekend – to cut the deficit o six runs.
