OMAHA, Neb. – Drew Beam dialed it back and Kavares Tears left the yard – both leading Tennessee to a 6-1 win over North Carolina Sunday night from Charles Schwab Field in the College World Series.

The No. 1 overall seeded Vols (57-12) will now advance on to play the winner of North Carolina (48-15) and Florida State, who play in an elimination contest on Tuesday. Wednesday’s contest will be at 2 o’clock eastern time as Tennessee will be playing to secure a spot in the College World Series Finals.

Whoever the Vols end up playing would need to defeat UT twice in order to knock them out. A Thursday ‘if necessary’ contest could take place if needed. Bottom line, the Vols are sitting pretty in Bracket 1.

Beam (9-2) earned the win after allowing only one run off four hits in five innings of work. The righty tallied seven strikeouts and walked only two in the outing. Tarheel starter Shae Sprague (3-2) took home the loss for North Carolina as the Vols plated four runs off three hits on him in four innings of work.

Tears put Tennessee on the board with a three-run homer in the fourth inning. Reese Chapman also left the yard with a solo shot in the fifth. Kirby Connell was fantastic in relief as well, tossing two innings of scoreless baseball.

This is the first time Tennessee has started 2-0 in the College World Series over the program’s seven appearances. Sunday also marked the 11th all-time win in Omaha for Tennessee. The Vols will get two off days on Monday and Tuesday before returning to action Wednesday. But before all of that, here’s how it went down against North Carolina on Sunday night.
