Southern Miss jumped out to a 4-0 lead for the second time in as many games and Tennessee’s season was on the brink. The Vols answered in a big, big way, though.

After a four-run third for Southern Miss, Tennessee erupted with six runs in the fourth and scored two more in the fifth to turn the game and the series around on the way to an 8-4 win.

Blake Burke hit a three-run home run that went 479 feet and Jared Dickey cleared the bases later in the inning with a two-run single and a two-base error. Tennessee’s two runs in the fifth came on a Southern Miss error. It was one of four errors committed by Southern Miss in the loss.

Chase Dollander retired 12 straight batters and 18 of 19 after giving up a three-run home run to Christopher Sargeant in the third. Dustin Dickerson single to open the scoring, driving in Matthew Etzel from third base, just before the Sergeant home run.

GAME 1: Southern Miss 5, Tennessee 3

Southern Miss scored four runs over the first four innings of Game 1 on Saturday and held off Tennessee in a 5-3 win after the game was resumed on Sunday afternoon. It was delayed twice by rain and lightning Saturday evening before later being postponed.

Tate Parker tripled to deep center field to score Dustin Dickerson and Christopher Sargent in a two-run first inning as the Golden Eagles jumped out to an early lead against Tennessee and starting pitcher Andrew Lindsey.

Dickerson followed with a solo home run in the third and Nick Monistere hit a solo shot in the fourth to make it 4-0. The game was twice delayed by weather with lightning in the area, both times with Tennessee batting and Vols on base.

Tennessee got on the board when Hunter Ensley was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the fifth inning Sunday, after the game was resumed. Jared Dickey followed with a single to score two more runs.

Southern Miss answered with a run in the top of the sixth on a fielder’s choice and shut the Vols out from there, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-game series.
