How it Happened: Tennessee takes series with seesaw battle win over Vanderbilt 7-6
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — For the first time since the 1990s, Tennessee has won back-to-back series in the state capital, taking game two of the three-game Southeastern Conference series over Vanderbilt 7-6 on Saturday afternoon from Hawkins Field.
With the win, the Vols move int a tie with Kentucky atop the SEC standings.
The top-ranked Vols (42-9, 19-7 SEC) plated four runs in the decisive sixth inning, three of which coming off the 23rd home run of the season from Christian Moore. The Commodores (33-18, 11-15 SEC) have now lost seven-straight conference games and are riding a nine-game losing streak to their rivals from East Tennessee. It’s also the eighth-straight series win for Tennessee.
Tennessee has now won back-to-back series in Nashville for the first time since 1993-1995 and at nine-games, it’s the third-longest win-streak over Vanderbilt in the series history. The Vols won 21-straight over the Commodores form April 1965 to April 1970 and 12 in-a-row from May 1961 to March 1963.
Drew Beam (7-2) is the winning pitcher for the ballgame despite allowing five runs in 5.1 innings of work. Greyson Carter (4-2) took home the loss out of the bullpen after giving up four runs off three hits in the sixth inning, collecting just one out. Nate Snead came on for Aaron Combs with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning with two runners in scoring position to collect the final two outs of the ballgame.
