(Angelina Alcantar/News Sentinel / USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images) Tennessee guard Bishop Boswell (3) dribbles the ball during an NCAA basketball game between the Tennessee Volunteers and UT Martin Skyhawks at Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center on Wednesday, Nov. 27, 2024.

Tennessee Basketball will be without Bishop Boswell against Middle Tennessee State Monday night at Food City Center. The freshman guard is out with a right shoulder issue and is considered day-to-day, according to the Vols.

Boswell was hurt midway through the second half of the 84-36 win over Western Carolina last week. He was seen in a sling after the game, but head coach Rick Barnes didn’t have an update during his postgame press conference.

“I think he got bruised,” Barnes said at the time. “We’ll see tomorrow. We’ll know more about it tomorrow.”

No. 1 Tennessee vs. MTSU, Monday, 7 p.m. ET

Tennessee (11-0) hosts Middle Tennessee State (9-3) Monday in a 7 p.m. Eastern Time start on SEC Network at Food City Center. The Vols are down to just two non-conference games left — they host Norfolk State next Tuesday — before SEC play starts at home against Arkansas on January 4.

The Vols will have eight scholarship players available for the game, with sophomore wing Cameron Carr leaving the program on Monday afternoon.

Boswell has appeared in nine games this season, averaging 4.0 minutes off the bench. He’s averaging 0.6 points and 0.8 rebounds per game, with six assists, two steals and five turnovers.

He played a season-high eight minutes against Montana on November 13, had a season-high three assists against Austin Peay and three rebounds at Illinois.

Injuries have been a problem for Tennessee this season.

Sophomore center JP Estrella is out for the season after undergoing foot surgery last month. Sophomore wing Cam Carr has also been out the last four weeks after undergoing surgery on his left thumb for a ligament injury.

Tennessee entered the season with 11 scholarship players, out of a possible 13, and played the first two weeks without Hofstra transfer Darlinstone Dubar, who missed four games while dealing with a personal matter.

Dubar also missed the win over Miami in the Jimmy V Classic in New York on December 10 while he was in concussion protocol. Boswell also missed the season-opening win over Gardner Webb on November 4 while he was in concussion protocol.

Vols have been using an eight-man rotation this season

Boswell has largely been the ninth man in an eight-man rotation for Tennessee so far this season. The Vols have two players averaging 30 or more minutes per game, with Zakai Zeigler averaging 32.5 and Jahmai Mashack averaging 30.4.

Four more players are averaging 20 or more minutes: Chaz Lanier (28.1), Jordan Gainey (26.3), Igor Milicic (24.9) and Felix Okpara (21.8).

Cade Phillips averages 12.8 minutes per game off the bench and Dubar is averaging 12.8 minutes. Estrella and Carr were averaging 10 minutes each before being injured.
