Chaz Lanier is the SEC Player of the Week, sharing the honor on Monday with Alabama’s Mark Sears. Lanier scored 30 points and made eight 3-pointers, both season highs, in Tennessee’s 77-69 win at Texas A&M on Saturday.

It’s the third SEC Player of the Week award for Lanier this season. He also won it on November 25, after scoring 51 points on 13 made threes against Virginia and Baylor, and on January 6, after scoring 53 points in wins over Norfolk State and Arkansas.

Sears had 30 points in a win over Kentucky Saturday night at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa and 35 in the 110-98 loss at Missouri on Wednesday.

Chaz Lanier this season: 18.0 points, 3.48 3FG per game, 41.4% 3FG

Lanier is Tennessee’s leading scorer, averaging 18.0 points per game. He’s shooting 42.4% from the field and 41.4% from the 3-point line, making 94 of 227 attempts so far this season.

Lanier finished 10-for-18 from the field and 8-for-13 from the 3-point line at A&M.

He has made six or more threes four times this season — his previous season high was the seven against Baylor in November — and has made four or more in 13 games.

“He’s been adjusting and doing a good job fighting through contact,” Tennessee assistant coach Rod Clark said on Monday, “understanding he has to give a little bit of aggression … it was good to see him have a night like that.”

Saturday was just the fifth time in Tennessee program history that a player has made eight 3-pointers in a game, with Lanier becoming the fourth player to do so.

Chaz Lanier on pace to make 108 3-pointers during regular season

Lanier is currently sixth on Tennessee’s list of most 3-pointers made in a single season, with 94. He’s on pace to make 108 3-pointers during Tennessee’s 31-game regular season, averaging 3.48 per game.

Chris Lofton holds the three highest single-season totals, with 118 in 2007-08, 114 in 2005-06 and 106 in 2006-07. Santiago Vescovi made 102 in 2021-22 and Allan Houston made 99 in 1990-91.

Lofton also holds the single-game record with nine threes made against Georgia in 2006.

“He has worked hard,” Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said of Lanier after the win at Texas A&M. “His teammates believe in him and, again, we’ve seen him do it. He’s done it before, early in the year. He had 25 points in the first half against Baylor and so we’ve seen him do that.

“And he’s had other games like that, but just really proud of the fact that he is continuing to try to get that better every day.”
