LEXINGTON — Step aside, Chris Lofton. Chaz Lanier is Tennessee Basketball’s new single-season 3-point king. Lanier made his 119th 3-pointer of the season, breaking Lofton’s record of 118, against UCLA in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday night at Rupp Arena.

Lanier broke the record Lofton’s record with 16:07 left in the second half against the Bruins.

He scored 29 points and made six 3-pointers in the 77-62 win over No. 15 Wofford Thursday night, giving him 116 on the season as he starred for the Vols in his NCAA Tournament debut.

Lofton set the previous record of 118 in 36 games during the 2007-08 season. Lofton also held the second-most and third-most 3-pointers in a single season, with 114 in 30 games during the 2005-06 season and 106 during the 2006-07 season.

Lofton also made 93 in 31 games during the 2004-05 season.

Lanier made a season-high eight 3-pointers — tied for second most in a single game in Tennessee program history — while scoring a season-high 30 points in Tennessee’s win at Texas A&M on February 22. He hit seven — all in the first half — in the win over Baylor in The Baha Mar Hoops Championship in The Bahamas in November.

He had six against Virginia, also in The Bahamas tournament, and six against Norfolk State on December 31.

Lofton holds the single-game record with nine threes made at Georgia in 2006.

Lanier made five or more threes in eight games this season, four or more in 13 games and three or more in 21 games. He was shut out from the 3-point line just twice: In the loss at Kentucky in February and at home against Austin Peay in November.

Only three Tennessee players have hit more than 100 threes in a single season, with Lanier and Lofton joined by Santiago Vescovi, who made 102 during the 2022-23 season.

Lanier made 106 3-pointers during his breakout season at North Florida a year ago, shooting 44.0% from the 3-point line.

He was one of the biggest names in the NCAA Transfer Portal during the offseason, ultimately picking Tennessee over Kentucky and BYU. Lanier, a Nashville native, played high school basketball at Ensworth School before going to North Florida.

Lanier entered the NCAA Tournament with 110 threes in 34 games. He led the SEC and was tied for seventh nationally in made 3-pointers. He was tied for 15th in 3-pointers per game, at 3.24, tied for 42nd in 3-point percentage 40.0% and 17th in 3-pointers attempted, with 275.
