A closer look at Kentucky

Kentucky’s 63-56 win at Tennessee on January 14 ended a run of four losses over the previous seven games and was the start of a four-game winning streak for the Cats. Kansas went to Rupp Arena and won 77-68 on January 28 to end the run. Arkansas won at Rupp, 88-73, on February 7 and Georgia beat Kentucky in Athens, 75-68, last Saturday, before Kentucky bounced back with a 71-68 win at Mississippi State on Wednesday.

Kentucky is No. 40 overall in the KenPom.com ratings, ranked No. 16 overall in adjusted offensive efficiency and No. 101 in adjusted defensive efficiency. The Wildcats are No. 39 in the NET, with a 2-7 record in Quad 1 games and a combined 15-2 record in Quad 2, 3 and 4 games. ESPN’s Joe Lunardi on Thursday had Kentucky as one of the last four teams in his 68-team NCAA Tournament bracket projection

Tennessee needs a win at Rupp to avoid being swept in the regular season by Kentucky for the first time under Barnes. He is 10-8 against Kentucky during his time at Tennessee, with five wins in Knoxville (2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022), three wins at Rupp Arena (2018, 2020 and 2021) and two wins in the SEC Tournament (2019, 2022).

Kentucky won 63-56 at Thompson-Boling Arena on January 14 thanks in large part to a dominant rebounding effort. The Wildcats nearly doubled up the Vols, 43-23, on the glass. Kentucky had 12 second-chance points on 13 offensive rebounds, while Tennessee had just four offensive boards.

Kentucky shot 35.3 percent from the field and 31.3 percent from the 3-point line. Tennessee shot 40.4 percent from the field but went just 3-for-21 from the 3-point line.

Uros Plavsic had 19 points and Santiago Vescovi scored 13 as the only Vols in double figures. Antonio Reeves led Kentucky with 18 points, ahead of 15 points and 13 rebounds from Oscar Tshiebwe and 13 points from CJ Fredrick
