How To Watch: No. 5 Tennessee Basketball at No. 15 Kentucky

Two weeks after a 78-73 loss to Kentucky at Food City Center in Knoxville, Tennessee gets another look at the rival Wildcats at Rupp Arena in Lexington on Tuesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN.

Tennessee (20-4, 7-4 SEC) has won three straight since the loss to Kentucky, beating Florida 64-44 and Missouri 85-81 at home, then going to Oklahoma Saturday for a 70-52 win.

Kentucky (16-7, 5-5) beat South Carolina 80-57 at Rupp Arena on Saturday, bouncing back from four losses over its previous five games. 

Tennessee won 103-92 at Kentucky last February. The Vols have won in Lexington four times during the Rick Barnes era— 61-59 in 2018, 81-73 in 2020, 82-71 in 2021 and 103-92 last season — but have lost four of their last five games in the Kentucky rivalry.

All five Kentucky starters scored in double-figures and the Wildcats went 12-for-24 from the 3-point line in a 78-73 win over then-No. 8 Tennessee in Knoxville. 

Koby Brea led the way with 18 points, Jaxson Robinson had 17, Otega Oweh scored 14, Ansley Almonor had 12 and Amari Williams had 10 points and 15 rebounds. Almonor went 4-for-7 from the 3-point line, Robinson was 4-for-9 and Brea was a perfect 3-for-3.

Tennessee, meanwhile, went 11-for-45 from three in the loss. Igor Milicic Jr. scored 19 points, Chaz Lanier had 15 and Zakai Zeigler scored 13. 

The win at Tennessee on January 28 was Kentucky’s only win in its 1-4 from January 18 to February 4. They came to Knoxville having lost back-to-back games at home against Alabama and on the road at Vanderbilt. After beating the Vols, they lost at home to Arkansas and at Ole Miss.

Bracketology, ranking updates for Tennessee and Kentucky

Tennessee stayed at No. 4 in the Coaches Poll and dropped one spot to No. 5 in the Associated Press Top 25 on Monday afternoon, after the wins over Missouri and Oklahoma last week.

Auburn stayed at No. 1 in the AP Top 25 while Alabama replaced the Tigers at No. 1 in the Coaches Poll. Auburn lost 90-81 at home against Florida on Saturday, before Alabama won at Arkansas. Duke, ranked No. 2 last week, also lost at Clemson on Saturday. 

The top five in the AP Top 25 is now No. 1 Auburn, No. 2 Alabama, Duke and Florida tied at No. 3 and Tennessee at No. 5. In the Coaches Poll it’s No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Auburn, No. 3 Duke, No. 4 Tennessee and No. 5 Duke.

Kentucky was ranked No. 15 in the AP Top 25 and No. 18 in the Coaches Poll. 

Tennessee is currently projected as the fourth No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament according to ESPN’s Joe Lunardi. Kentucky on Saturday night was a No. 4 seed, slotted in as the No. 15 overall seed according to Lunardi.
