A Closer Look: Louisville Cardinals
The Pat Kelsey era started at Louisville on Monday with a 93-45 win over Morehead State. Kesley went 75-27 in three seasons at College of Charleston before being hired to replace Kenny Payne at Louisville. He won 186 games over nine seasons at Winthrop. He took both Charleston and Winthrop to the first round of the NCAA Tournament twice.
Kelsey’s new-look roster was built almost entirely out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. He added three players from College of Charleston, two from BYU as well as one from Colorado, Washington, Northern Kentucky, James Madison, South Florida, Wisconsin, Georgia and Long Beach State.
“(They) play hard,” Tennessee assistant coach Rod Clark said Friday when describing a Kelsey-coached team. “They play really fast. They’re going to take their shots for sure. I think at Charleston he did a really good job of playing an up tempo style that was tough for his opponents. And he always played really well against the high-major teams. And obviously I think they beat a few of them as well.”
The game is the start of a two-year home-and-home between the two programs, with Louisville scheduled to come to Knoxville in December 2025.
“We think it’s going to be a great game for us,” Clark said. “We’re happy we were able to get this home at home on the schedule, especially with a prestigious program like Louisville. So we’re looking forward to it.”
