Tennessee Basketball takes it newly acquired No. 1 ranking to New York City to face Miami in the Jimmy V Classic Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. Tipoff is schedule for 6:30 p.m. Eastern Time on ESPN.
The Vols (8-0) are off to their best start under Rick Barnes and the best start for the program since starting 9-0 in 2000-01. Miami (3-6) has lost six straight games, including the last three at home against Charleston Southern, Arkansas and Clemson.
Tennessee is back in the Jimmy V Classic for the second time in four years. The Vols lost to Texas Tech 57-52 in December 2021 at Madison Square Garden. This year’s four-team event also includes Arkansas vs. Michigan in the second game of the doubleheader.

Tennessee ranked No. 1 for third time in program history
Tennessee on Monday moved up to No. 1 in both the Associated Press Top 25 and the Coaches Poll on Monday after a slew of upsets last week. The Vols received 58 of 62 first-place votes in the AP Top 25 and 26 first-place votes out of 32 in the Coaches Poll.
It’s just the third time in program history, and the second time under Rick Barnes, that Tennessee has been ranked No. 1. The Vols spent one week as the top-ranked team in February 2008 and spent four week there in February 2019, during a program record 19-game win streak and 23-1 start to the season.

Tennessee vs. Miami: Series History
Tennessee and Miami have played just four times dating back to 1954, with the Vols winning three of the four. The two teams played a home-and-home in 1995 and 1996, with Tennessee winning 56-54 at Miami in December 1995 and winning 78-65 at home in December 1996.
Miami beat Tennessee 72-60 in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1991 and the Vols won 89-80 in December 1954 in Montgomery, Ala.
The 1954 game in Montgomery was part of the Montgomery Invitational and the game in Puerto Rico was the San Juan Shootout.
