STARKVILLE — Tennessee basketball is back on the road for the first of two games away from home this week, starting with Mississippi State on Wednesday at Humphrey Coliseum in Starkville. The Vols (11-3, 1-0 SEC) and Bulldogs (11-3, 0-1) are set for a 7 p.m. Eastern Time start on SEC Network.
Mississippi State saw its five-game winning streak snapped on Saturday in a 68-62 loss at South Carolina to open SEC play. The Bulldogs earlier this season lost back-to-back games to Georgia Tech, 67-59 on the road, and at home to Southern, 60-59.
Tennessee’s 90-64 romp over Ole Miss in Knoxville on Saturday was its seventh straight win, dating back to the three-game losing streak in late November against Purdue, Kansas and North Carolina.

The Bulldogs are No. 27 overall in the KenPom.com ratings, ranked No. 10 in adjusted defensive efficiency (93.1) and No. 78 in adjusted offensive efficiency (110.7). Tennessee is ranked No. 4 overall by KenPom and comes in at No. 2 defensively (89.7) and No. 23 offensively (116.1).
Guard Josh Hubbard leads Mississippi State in scoring at 14.4 points per game, forward Jimmy Bell Jr. leads the team in rebounding at 8.6 per game and guard Dashawn Davis leads the team in assists at 3.4 per game.
Tolu Smith, the 6-foot-11, 245-pound senior, has played in the last two games after coming back from a foot injury. He had 16 points and nine rebounds in a win over Bethune Cookman and 13 points and four boards in the loss at South Carolina, averaging 19.5 minutes in the two games.
Wednesday’s game marks the seventh trip to Starkville during the Rick Barnes era. The Vols have won their last two games at Humphrey Coliseum — 70-59 last season and 72-63 in 2021-22 — and are 10-2 against Mississippi State under Barnes.
