Tennessee Basketball will finish 2024 the way the Vols started it. No. 1 Tennessee hosts Norfolk State on New Year’s Eve Tuesday afternoon in a 3 p.m. Eastern Time start at Food City Center in Knoxville. The game can be streamed on SEC Network+.

The Vols beat Norfolk State 87-50 at home on January 2 last season.

Tennessee (12-0), coming off an 82-64 win over Middle Tennessee State last week, is ranked No. 1 for the fourth straight week and is two wins away from matching its best start in program history. Norfolk State (9-6) is coming off a 77-74 win at Norfolk State on Sunday, its third straight win.

Where the Vols are ranked

Tennessee stayed at the top of the Associated Press Top 25 and the Coaches Poll on Monday afternoon, coming in just ahead of No. 2 Auburn in both polls. The Vols reviewed 41 first-place votes in the AP Top 25, to Auburn’s 20, and 20 first-place votes in the Coaches Poll, to Auburn 11.

The NET ranking has Tennessee at No. 2 behind Auburn. The Vols are 3-0 in Quad 1 games and a combined 9-0 in Quad 3 and Quad 4 games. Auburn is 6-1 in Quad 1 and 5-0 in Quad 3 and Quad 4.

The Vols are ranked No. 3 overall in the KenPom.com ratings, behind No. 1 Auburn and No. 2 Duke. Tennessee is No. 2 in adjusted defensive efficiency, giving up 88.4 points per 100 possessions, and are No. 15 in adjusted offensive efficiency, scoring 119.5 points per 100 possessions.

Tennessee stayed perfect with an 82-64 win over MTSU last Monday at Food City Center, but it didn’t come without a sweat. The Vols trailed by six points at halftime before answering the bell in the second half, outscoring the Blue Raiders 48-24 after the break on the way to the 18-point win.

Zakai Zeigler scored 17 points and had a career-high 15 assists to lead the Vols in the win and be on his way to the SEC Player of the Week award. He has 27 points, 24 assists and 14 rebounds over his last two games, altering coming up one assist shy of a triple-double in the December 17 win over Western Carolina, finishing with 10 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

Chaz Lanier scored a team-high 23 points while Felix Okpara scored 10 of his 12 in the first half. Jordan Gainey scored all 10 of his points in the second half and Igor Milicic finished with seven points and 10 rebounds.
