Where Tennessee Basketball is ranked after the 53-51 loss at No. 1 Auburn

Tennessee Basketball came in at No. 8 in Monday’s updated Associated Press Top 25 and Coaches Poll, moving down one spot in the Coaches Poll and two spots in the AP Top 25 after splitting games last week, beating Mississippi State 68-56 at home and losing 53-51 at No. 1 Auburn.

The Vols (17-3, 4-3 SEC) are back home this week to start a three-game home stand, beginning with Kentucky (14-5, 3-3) on Tuesday (7 p.m. Eastern Time, ESPN) at Food City Center. Florida comes to town on Saturday and Tennessee hosts Missouri, ranked No. 20 in the AP Top 25 and No. 21 in the Coaches Poll, on February 5. 

Kentucky dropped to No. 12 in both the AP Top 25 and Coaches Poll after losing back-to-back games, 102-97 at home against Alabama on January 18 and 74-69 at Vanderbilt on Saturday. Florida, is No. 5 in the AP Top 25 and No. 6 in the Coaches Poll, has won five of its last six, starting with the win over the Vols in Gainesville on January 7. 

Where Tennessee is ranked in KenPom, NET

Tennessee is ranked No. 4 in the NET with a 5-3 record in Quad 1 games, 2-0 in Quad 2, 3-0 in Quad 3 and 7-0 in Quad 4.

The next five games for the Vols are currently Quad 1 games — Kentucky, Florida, Missouri, at Oklahoma and at Kentucky — and nine of the remaining 11 games left on the regular-season schedule are Quad 1 games. The exceptions are Vanderbilt at home on February 15, currently a Quad 2 game, and South Carolina at home on March 8, currently at Quad 3 game.

Tennessee is ranked No. 6 overall in the KenPom.com ratings. The Vols moved up to No. 1 in adjusted defensive efficiency after holding Auburn to 53 points on the road. They’re giving up 86.8 points per 100 possessions, the lowest total over the last three seasons. 

Tennessee is No. 34 in adjusted offensive efficiency, scoring 117.3 points per 100 possessions. 

Where the Vols are projected in ESPN Bracketology 

The Vols entered the weekend as the No. 5 overall seed in the latest NCAA Tournament Bracketology update from ESPN’s Joe Lunardi

Tennessee was the first team on the No. 2 seed line, ahead of Florida, Kansas and Marquette, respectively. The No. 4 seeds on Friday were Auburn, Duke, Alabama and Iowa State. 

Lunardi currently has 13 SEC teams projected to make the NCAA Tournament, with Kentucky, Mississippi State and Texas A&M among the top 16 overall seeds late last week. Vanderbilt and Oklahoma were in as two of the last four teams to receive byes in Lunardi’s bracket. 

ESPN on Friday morning had Tennessee as the No. 2 seed in the East Region, facing No. 15 Cleveland State in Raleigh, N.C., and playing opposite of No. 7 Clemson and No. 10 Oklahoma.
