Tennessee did not shoot a free throw in the first half and finished the game 8-for-10 at the foul line. The Vols were called for 24 fouls to Arizona’s 15 while the Wildcats went 24-for-27 at the foul line.
The Tennessee lead in the first half was as large as seven and the deficit in the second half was as much as 10, before the Vols rallied back within one point. Arizona used a 6-0 run for the go-ahead points with just under three minutes left in the second half.
“Give Arizona credit,” Tennessee coach Rick Barnes said after the loss. “It was a hard-fought game which you knew it would be. When you go on the road and you guys know that. Coming down the stretch in a possession game like that you can not, can’t turn it over the way we did and you can’t have the defensive breakdowns. That’s simply sometimes just fouling and putting guys on the free throw line.”
