Where Tennessee Basketball is ranked entering the postseason

Tennessee Basketball was ranked No. 6 in the Coaches Poll and No. 8 in the Associated Press Top 25 on Monday afternoon, dropping two spots in the Coaches Poll and four spots in the AP Top 25 after splitting games with Ole Miss and South Carolina last week.

The Vols (25-6, 11-6 SEC) lost 78-76 at Ole Miss on Wednesday and beat South Carolina 75-65 in the regular-season finale on Saturday to finish fourth in the SEC standings.

Tennessee has a double-bye into the SEC Tournament quarterfinals and will play Friday afternoon at approximately 3:30 Eastern Time (TV: ESPN) against either No. 5 Texas A&M, No. 12 Vanderbilt or No. 13 Texas.

Tennessee was ranked in the top five for 10 weeks during the regular season, including five weeks spent at No. 1 between December 9 and January 6. The Vols were ranked in the top 10 in 16 of the 19 weeks.

ESPN Bracketology: Vols projected as a No. 2 seed in NCAA Tournament

ESPN’s Joe Lunardi had Tennessee projected as the No. 2 seed in the East Region in his Bracketology update Sunday night, with the Vols facing No. 15 Central Connecticut in Cleveland in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. 

Auburn (South), Duke (East), Houston (Midwest) and Florida (West) continue to be Lunardi’s No. 1 seeds. The other No. 2 seeds are Michigan State, Alabama and Texas Tech. 

The No. 3 seed in the East Region with Tennessee is Iowa State and the No. 4 is Wisconsin.

Tennessee is ranked No. 5 in the NET, with a 10-6 record in Quad 1 games. The Vols are 4-0 in Quad 2, 5-0 in Quad 3 and 6-0 in Quad 4. Duke is ranked No. 1 in the NET, ahead of Auburn, Houston and Florida. 

Tennessee’s KenPom.com numbers

Tennessee finished the regular season at No. 5 in the KenPom.com ratings. The Vols are No. 1 in adjusted defensive efficiency, giving up 88.4 points per 100 possessions, and are No. 22 in adjusted offensive efficiency, scoring 119.2 points per 100 possessions. 

Tennessee has finished in the top five in KenPom defense each of the last five seasons, and has been No. 1 in two of the last three. The Vols finished No. 3 last season (90.2), No. 1 in 2023 (87.5), No. 3 in 2022 (86.4) and No. 5 in 2021 (88.1). 

The No. 22 ranking on offense is Tennessee’s highest since the 2018-19 team was ranked No. 3, scoring 122.7 points per 100 possessions. Last season the Vols finished at No. 28 at 116.8.
