Tennessee Basketball’s No. 1 ranking has the attention of Five-Star+ Nate Ament. So does what the Vols did with Dalton Knecht last season. And what they’re doing with Chaz Lanier right now.

“I mean, they’re the No. 1 team in the country,” Ament said during an interview with On3’s Jamie Shaw. “They play fast and Coach (Rick) Barnes is a great offensive coach. He does a great job with his guys, getting them in the best positions.”

Ament is a 6-foot-9, 185-pound wing is ranked by On3 as the No. 3 overall player in the class of 2025. He’s the No. 2 small forward in the class and the No. 1 player in the state of Virginia, out of Highland High School in Manassas.

Nate Ament took an official visit to Tennessee in October

“(Barnes) did it with (Dalton) Knecht,” Ament told Shaw, “and with Chaz Lanier. He’s got him as a front runner for player of the year. Coach Barnes gets him to his spots and makes sure he knows where he wants him to be on the court. And Chaz has been doing a tremendous job.”

Ament took an official visit to Tennessee on October 18. He has taken other official visits to Notre Dame, Texas and Louisville. He also discussed plans to visit Duke and Kansas State, with visits set, and visits to Arkansas and Kentucky, with dates still to be determined.

Tennessee currently has two signings in the 2025 class, with four-star shooting guard Amari Evans and four-star center Dewayne Brown signing during the early period in November.

The 6-foot-5, 204-pound Evans is ranked No. 83 overall in the On3 Industry Ranking. He’s the No. 21 shooting guard in the class and the No. 11 overall player in the state of Pennsylvania.

Brown is a 6-foot-9, 235-pound center out of Hoover High School in Hoover, Ala. He’s ranked No. 102 overall, No. 10 at center and No. 1 in the state of Alabama.

Ament planning to announce commitment in February or March

Ament is the top available player in the 2025 class and told Shaw he’s still planning to announce a commitment decision in “late-February, early-March timeframe.”

“My teams don’t have a player like me,” Ament said, “so seeing if these teams have had highly-ranked freshmen play for them and his they’ve developed them.

“Do they have an immediate impact and look at their growth through the season. Just looking at how they fare in conference play and how these teams get better throughout the year.”
