CHARLOTTE — Tennessee is back in the NCAA Tournament and the Vols are hoping Cinderella’s slipper doesn’t fit. On Thursday night the Vols, the No. 2 seed in the Midwest Region, take on No. 15 Saint Peter’s in the first round at the Spectrum Center, a 9:20 p.m. Eastern Time start on TNT.

Follow along for all the live updates before, during and after tonight’s game on The General’s Quarters

The Peacocks two years ago went from a No. 15 seed to the Elite Eight, upsetting No. 2 Kentucky, No. 7 Murray State and No. 3 Purdue before losing to No. 8 North Carolina in the fourth round.

Tennessee (24-8) has dropped back-to-back games, its first losing streak since November, after losing to Kentucky at Thompson-Boling Arena on Senior Day on March 9, then against Mississippi State last week in the SEC Tournament quarterfinal round at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville.

Saint Peter’s (19-13), after finishing fifth in the MAAC regular-season standings, had to beat Rider, Quinnipiac and Fairfield to win its conference tournament and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the second time in three years.

A Closer Look: Saint Peter’s Peacocks

Senior guard Latrell Reid is the lone holdover from the Saint Peter’s Elite Eight run two years ago. Head coach Shaheen Holloway left for the Seton Hall job three days after the loss to North Carolina and multiple players transferred, including NCAA Tournament starts Daryl Banks and Doug Edert.

Bashir Mason was hired to replace Holloway. He’s 33-31 in two seasons leading the Peacocks after spending the previous 10 seasons at Wagner, where he won 165 games and took the program to the NIT twice.

Mason said during his press conference on Wednesday that the Saint Peter’s program is still reaping the rewards from the Elite Eight run, despite the turnover within.

“When you pick up the phone and call and you say Saint Peter’s, most kids say, man, I watched you guys make a run,'” Mason said. “‘I was cheering for you guys. You guys were doing a great job.’

“Once they stop ranting and raving, I usually follow it up with, hey, that wasn’t me. I’m the guy that replaced that guy.”
