Tennessee and FAU have met just once before, a 81-62 win for the Vols in December 2015. Tennessee is 1-7 in the eight previous Sweet Sixteen games, with the only win being over Ohio State in 2010. The Vols fell to Michigan State in the Elite Eight.

Tennessee is back in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2019, when the second-seeded Vols lost to No. 3 Purdue in overtime in Louisville.

FAU is in the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in program history. The Owls became a Division I program in 1993-94 and went to the NCAA Tournament in 2002, losing to No. 2-seed Alabama in the opening round.
