Tarleton State: A Closer Look
Tarleton State is ranked No. 194 overall in the KenPom.com ratings. The Texas are No. 175 in adjusted defensive efficiency, giving up 104.8 points per 100 possessions, and are No. 221 in adjusted offensive efficiency.
Billy Gillispie, the former Texas A&M and Kentucky head coach, is in his third season as head coach at Tarleton State. He led the program to a 17-17 record last season, after going 14-17 in 2021-22 and 10-10 in 2020-21.
He won 70 games in three seasons at Texas A&M, from 2004 to 2007, taking the Aggies to one Sweet Sixteen. He was hired as head coach at Kentucky 2007-08, but was fired after going 40-27 over two seasons, including an NIT appearance in 2008-09.
“Billy Gillispie’s health is the first priority,” Tarleton State athletic director Lonn Reisman said. “At this time, his medical circumstances are preventing him from leading our men’s basketball program, and our prayers are with him.
“Until Coach Gillispie can return, we are officially labeling Joseph Jones as acting head coach,” Reisman added. “He has done a tremendous job over these few weeks and we know he’ll continue to be a great leader for our men’s basketball student-athletes.”
