BetOnline: Tennessee's College Football Playoff chances up 25% after last week's chaos
No team benefitted more from last week’s college football chaos than Tennessee. According to odds from BetOnline, the Vols now have an 83.3% chance to make the 12-team College Football Playoff, an increase of 25% from the previous week.
Tennessee (9-2, 5-2 SEC) goes to Vanderbilt (6-5, 3-4) on Saturday (Noon Eastern Time, ABC) with 1/5 odds to make the College Football Playoff. The Vols are -500 on the moneyline.
ESPN’s Playoff Predictor currently gives Tennessee a 79% chance to make the playoff. With a win at Vanderbilt on Saturday, the Vols would have a 97% chance to make it, a 36% chance to host in the first round and a 60% chance to go on the road.
Tennessee moved up to No. 8 in new College Football Playoff rankings on Tuesday
The College Football Playoff selection committee on Tuesday moved Tennessee up to No. 8 in the new CFP Top 25 and seeded the Vols ninth in the 12-team bracket. They were ranked 11th last week and were the first team out of the 12-team playoff bracket.
The projected bracket had Tennessee as the No. 9 playing at No. 8 Georgia in the first round of the playoffs, with the winner advancing to face No. 1 Oregon in the Rose Bowl.
Coming off a 31-17 loss at Georgia, Tennessee needed help last week and got a ton of it. Most notably in the SEC, Ole Miss lost at Florida and Alabama lost at Oklahoma. Indiana also lost 38-15 at Ohio State.
Alabama’s playoff chances dropped to 31.3% to make the playoff after the 24-3 loss at Oklahoma, falling 57.5% from the previous week. Ole Miss dropped down to a 21.1% chance, down 58.9% from the week before.

Alabama now had 11/5 odds to make the playoff and Ole Miss is 15/4. Alabama is +220 moneyline and Ole Miss is +375.

The biggest jumps after Saturday, behind Tennessee’s 25%, was South Carolina at 20%, Arizona State at 18.5% and Indiana at 15.7%. Indiana has 1/22 odds to make the playoff and is -2200 on the moneyline. Arizona State has 13/10 odds (+130) and South Carolina has 4/1 odds (+400).
The new bracket on Tuesday had Oregon, Texas, Miami and Boise State getting byes into the quarterfinal round. The other first-round matchups were No. 12 Arizona State at No. 5 Ohio State, No. 11 Indiana at No. 6 Penn State and No. 10 SMU at No. 7 Notre Dame.
Ranked ahead of Tennessee in the CFP Top 25 was Oregon at No. 1, Ohio State at No. 2, Texas at No. 3, Penn State and No. 4 and Notre Dame was No. 5. Miami was No. 6 and Georgia was No. 7. Alabama dropped to No. 13 and Ole Miss was ranked No. 14, just ahead of No. 15 South Carolina and No. 16 Arizona State.
