Where Tennessee Football finished in the final Associated Press Top 25 of the season
Tennessee Football finished No. 9 in the final Associated Press Top 25 of the season, released after No. 1 Ohio State beat No. 2 Notre Dame 34-23 in the College Football Playoff National Championship Game Monday night in Atlanta.
The Vols (10-3) dropped two spots in the final AP Poll. Behind the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish were No. 3 Oregon, No. 4 Texas, No. 5 Penn State, No. 6 Georgia, No. 7 Arizona State and No. 8 Boise State. Indiana was ranked 19th, Ole Miss was No. 11 and SMU was No. 12.
Tennessee’s 10-win season ended in a 42-17 loss against Ohio State at Ohio Stadium in Columbus on December 21.
Tennessee was ranked as high as No. 4 in the AP Top 25 this season
The Vols were ranked as high as No. 4 in the AP Top 25 this season, after starting the season 4-0 with wins over Chattanooga, North Carolina State, Kent State and at Oklahoma.
Tennessee dropped four spots to No. 8 after the 19-14 loss at Arkansas on October 5 and were back up to No. 6 after moving to 8-1 with a 33-14 win over Mississippi State at Neyland Stadium.
The 31-17 loss at Georgia dropped the Vols four spots again, this time to No. 10, but they moved back up to No. 6 on December 1 and were No. 7 on December 8, entering the postseason.

Tennessee started at No. 15 in the Preseason AP Top 25 released on August 12. The Vols moved up to No. 14 in Week 2, No. 7 in Week 3, No. 6 in Week 4 and No. 5 in Week 5.
The Vols finished No. 17 in the AP Top 25 last season, after a 9-4 year.
Vols open 2025 season against No. 20 Syracuse
Ohio State’s win over Tennessee in the first round of the College Football Playoff sparked a run through the new 12-team CFP bracket. The Buckeyes beat No. 1 Oregon in the Rose Bowl on New Year’s Day, in the quarterfinal round, then beat Texas in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas in the semifinals to advance to the national championship game.
As for opponents on Tennessee’s 2025 schedule, Georgia was the highest ranked in the final AP Poll at No. 6. Alabama finished at No. 17 and Syracuse is ranked No. 20 after finishing 10-4.
The Vols open next season against Syracuse in the Aflac Kickoff Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta on August 30.
Florida was not ranked, but received seven votes in the final poll after finishing the season 9-4.
