How To Watch: No. 21 Tennessee vs. No. 16 Iowa in the Citrus Bowl

Tennessee football is back in a New Year’s Day bowl game for the first time since 2016, with the Vols facing Iowa in the Citrus Bowl on January 1 at Camping World Stadium in Orlando. The game is a 1 p.m. Eastern Time kickoff and will be televised by ABC.

The last New Year’s Day appearance for the Vols was the 45-6 win over Northwestern on January 1, 2016 at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa.

Iowa (10-3) capped a 10-win regular season with a win at Nebraska on November 24, then lost to No. 1 Michigan 26-0 in the Big Ten championship game Saturday night at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

Tennessee (8-4) wrapped up its regular season with a 48-24 win over Vanderbilt on Senior Day at Neyland Stadium last week, bouncing back from back-to-back losses at Missouri and at home against Georgia.

A Closer Look: The Iowa Hawkeyes

Iowa was shutout in the Big Ten championship game Saturday night, losing to No. 1 Michigan 26-0 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. 

The Hawkeyes are 10-3 on the season with other losses at Penn State, 31-0, and at home against Minnesota, 12-10.

Iowa started 3-0, including a win at Iowa State in Week 2, had another three-game winning streak against Michigan State, Purdue and at Wisconsin and won four straight to close the regular-season schedule, beating Northwestern, Rutgers, Illinois and Nebraska.

Iowa is ranked 130th, out of 133, in scoring offense in college football this season, averaging 16.6 points per game. The Hawkeyes are fourth in scoring defense, giving up just 13.2 points per game.

Bowl History: Tennessee in the Citrus Bowl

Tennessee beat Maryland 30-23 on December 17, 1983 in its first Citrus Bowl appearance. The Vols returned to the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day in 1994, losing 31-13 to Penn State.

It was back-to-back wins in the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day 1996 and New Year’s Day 1997. 

The Vols beat Eddie George’s Ohio State team 20-14 in the driving rain in Orlando in 1996, capping an 11-1 1995 season, and beat Northwestern 48-28 in 1997 to finish the 1996 season at 10-2.

Tennessee returned to the Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day 2002, the last appearance in Orlando for the Vols, and beat Michigan 45-17.
