Tennessee Football announces ‘Dark Mode’ uniform for Kentucky game

Tennessee Football is running it back with its black ‘Dark Mode’ alternate uniform for Saturday night’s game against Kentucky at Neyland Stadium. The Vols announced the uniform combination Monday morning on social media.

The Vols (6-1, 3-1 SEC) and Wildcats (3-5, 1-5) are scheduled for a 7:45 p.m. Eastern Time start on SEC Network.

Tennessee wore the all-black uniform two years ago against Kentucky in another night game in Knoxville, in a 44-6 romp over UK. Last season Tennessee went with the ‘Dark Mode’ look in the 41-20 home win over South Carolina.

The Vols wore their traditional home the last weeks, in the 23-17 overtime win against Florida and the 24-17 win over Alabama.

Tennessee wore its Smokey Grey alternate and orange jerseys and orange pants in the first two home games of the season, in wins over Chattanooga and Kent State.

Tennessee wore white jerseys and white pants in the 51-10 win over North Carolina State in the Duke’s Mayo Classic on September 7 and the 25-15 win at Oklahoma two weeks later. The Vols wore white jerseys and orange pants in the 19-14 loss at Arkansas on Saturday night.

Tennessee Football’s uniform options

Tennessee opened the season in its Smokey Grey alternate uniform in the 69-3 win over Chattanooga on August 31 and wore orange jerseys and orange pants against Kent State in the 71-0 win on September 14.

The Smokey Grey alternate, part of the Smokey Grey Series, paid tribute to the Volunteer State, with the jersey featuring the Tri-Star logo on the sleeve, Tennessee across the chest and an an altered helmet stripe and pants stripe mimicked the state flag.

Alternate uniforms have been a constant during the Josh Heupel era. The Vols introduced their Dark Mode alternate uniform in 2021, with black pants and black jerseys, with orange numbers and orange pants stripes. An all-black helmet, with an orange Power T and orange helmet stripe, was added in 2022.

Tennessee also debuted an alternate orange helmet for the first time in program history at South Carolina in 2022. The Smokey Grey alternate returned in 2022.

The Kentucky-Tennessee Series

Tennessee is 84-26-9 in a series that dates back to October 21, 1893. The Vols are 3-0 against Kentucky during the Josh Heupel era, winning 45-42 at Kentucky in 2021, 44-6 at Neyland Stadium in 2022 and 33-27 at Kentucky last season. 

The Wildcats have just three wins in the series since 1985. Kentucky won 10-7 in Lexington in 2011, ending a run of 26 straight losses to the Vols, won 29-26 in 2017 and 34-7 in 2020.

Tennessee went 19-1-2 against Kentucky between 1926 and 1951, won 11 straight between 1965 and 1975 and started its streak of 26 in a row with a 42-0 win in Lexington in 1985.
