Where Tennessee and Tennessee's opponents are ranked in ESPN's updated Football Power Index
Tennessee’s struggles in its 30-13 win over Austin Peay Saturday night at Neyland Stadium led to the Vols dropping 10 spots in ESPN’s updated Football Power Index, going from No. 12 to No. 22.
The ESPN still projects the Vols to go 8-4 this season, giving them a 95.7% chance to win at least six games, and 11.0% chance to win the SEC East, a 3.4% chance to win the SEC, a 2.5% chance to make the College Football Playoff, an 0.8% chance to make the national championship game and an 0.3% chance to win the national title. The FPI also gives an 0.3% chance of Tennessee winning out.
Tennessee (2-0) opens SEC play at Florida (1-1) on Saturday, a 7 p.m. Eastern Time kickoff on ESPN, from Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville. The Vols then host UTSA (September 23) and South Carolina (September 30) before a bye week on October 7.
Here’s where the 10 remaining opponents for the Vols are ranked in ESPN’s FPI through two weeks:
No. 1 Alabama: … The Crimson Tide is ranked No. 1 in the FPI despite the 34-24 loss to Texas (which moved up three spots to No. 6 in the FPI) Saturday night in Tuscaloosa. The FPI gives Bama a 15.3% chance to win out.
Tennessee’s current FPI Chance to beat Alabama: 14.8%
No. 3 Georgia: The Bulldogs stayed put at No. 3 in the updated rankings after starting the season with wins over UT Martin (48-7) and Ball State (45-3). They host South Carolina to start SEC play on Saturday.
Tennessee’s current FPI Chance to beat Georgia: 25.3%
No. 19 Texas A&M: The Aggies moved down two spots to No. 19 after the 48-33 loss at Miami Saturday night. A&M started the season with a 52-10 win over New Mexico and hosts Louisiana Monroe on Saturday.
Tennessee’s current FPI Chance to beat Texas A&M: 59.2%
No. 29 Florida: The Gators moved up three spots to No. 29 overall after a 49-7 win over McNeese Saturday night in Gainesville. Florida opened the season with a 24-11 loss at Utah on August 31.
Tennessee’s current FPI Chance to beat Florida: 54.3%
No. 41 Kentucky: The Wildcats plummeted 15 spots to No. 41 overall after having to survive an attempted upset by Eastern Kentucky on Saturday. Kentucky beat EKU 28-17, a week removed from a 44-14 win over Ball State.

No. 44 South Carolina: The Gamecocks are up three spots in the updated rankings after a 47-21 win over Furman Saturday night in Columbia. North Carolina beat South Carolina 31-17 in Charlotte last week.

No. 47 Missouri: Mizzou is down nine spots after a 23-19 win over Middle Tennessee State Saturday night in Columbia. The season started with a 35-10 win over South Dakota State on August 31.
