Tennessee football is back on the road to start the Southeastern Conference schedule against rival Florida Saturday night at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville. It’s a 7 p.m. Eastern Time start on ESPN between the Vols and Gators.

Tennessee (2-0) started the season with a 49-13 win over Virginia at Nissan Stadium in Nashville on September 2 and on Saturday evening shook off a slow start to beat Austin Peay 30-13. Florida (1-1) opened the season with a 24-11 loss at then-No. 14 Utah on August 31 and opened its home schedule Saturday night with a 49-7 win over McNeese.

A year ago Tennessee won 38-33 at Neyland Stadium. The Vols haven’t won in The Swamp since 2003.

“It’s a great environment in this game,” Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said during his weekly press conference on Monday. “And yesterday has nothing to do with today. The previous game, our previous play has nothing to do with what’s gonna happen on the next play.

“It’s about preparing the right way, practicing the right way that will lead to you playing the right way.”

Heupel ruled Mays out for the Austin Peay game on Wednesday and said the Vols were hoping to get him 100 percent healthy before the game at Florida. He updated the status of Mays during his weekly press conference on Monday.

“He was with us last week,” Heupel said. “Warmed up with us. We made a decision pretty early in the week that he probably would not play in that football game. And, anticipate him having a good week of practice here, getting ready.”

Keenan Pili, the BYU transfer at middle linebacker, was lost for multiple weeks after being injured in the season-opening win over Virginia. Sophomore Elijah Herring started in his place against Austin Peay, while freshmen linebackers Arion Carter and Jeremiah Telander also got more reps.

“Destructive,” Heupel said of Herring’s play. “Communicated at a high level. He’s the young guy that his best football is gonna continue to come down the pipe. Great confidence in him. From the rest of the guys that played too, saw a lot of things that we liked.”
