How It Happened: No. 11 Georgia 31, No. 6 Tennessee 17

ATHENS — No. 6 Tennessee jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter Saturday night at Sanford Stadium, but No. 11 Georgia had all the answers from there, erasing the deficit on the way to a 31-17 win.

Here’s how it happened, as it happened:

First Quarter

Tennessee 7, Georgia 0 (10:09): After forcing a Georgia three-and-out to start the game, Tennessee’s offense took over and marched down the field. The Vols went 78 yards in 12 plays and got in the end zone on a 1-yard touchdown run by tight end Miles Kitselman. Nico Iamaleava went 4-for-6 for 33 yards on the drive and Dylan Sampson ran four times for 18 yards.

Tennessee 10, Georgia 0 (2:37): Tennessee’s third possession went just three yards in four plays, but it ended with a 52-yard field goal from Max Gilbert. The three points were set up by freshman defense back Boo Carter, who returned a punt 26 yards to set the Vols up at the Georgia 37-yard line.

Second Quarter

Tennessee 10, Georgia 7 (13:30): Georgia answered Tennessee’s field goal with a seven-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, capped with a 19-yard pass from Carson Beck to Oscar Delp. The Bulldogs got off the mat on the final play of the first quarter, with Beck and Dominic Lovett connecting on a 38-yard pass to give Georgia its first snap in Tennessee territory.

Georgia 14, Tennessee 10 (6:36): Georgia took its first lead when Beck threw his second touchdown pass to Delp. This time it was a 4-yard touchdown pass to complete a 10-play, 84-yard touchdown drive that took 4:26 off the clock.

Tennessee 17, Georgia 14 (1:54): Back came Tennessee. And the Vols did it on the ground. Dylan Sampson ran 27 yards for a touchdown on the first play after the two-minute timeout, giving the lead back to Tennessee. The 10-play, 75-yard touchdown drive included two runs covering a total of 26 yards from freshman running back Peyton Lewis. The Vols converted on a fourth-and-2 on the Georgia 37-yard line with a three-yard run from Sampson.

Tennessee 17, Georgia 17 (0:05): Georgia got three points back to tie the game just before halftime on a 12-play, 57-yard drive, taking 1:49 off the clock. Peyton Woodring connected from 36 yards to tie it at 17-17.

Third Quarter

Georgia 24, Tennessee 17 (5:32): Tennessee was forced to punt after driving to the Georgia 36-yard line to open the third quarter and the Bulldogs went 87 yards for the go-ahead score on the ensuing drive. Carson Beck ran 10 yards for the touchdown on third-and-7 to cap the 12-play touchdown drive, taking 7:22 off the clock.

 Fourth Quarter

Georgia 31, Tennessee 17 (2:26): Nate Frazier sealed it for Georgia with a 2-yard touchdown run with 2:26 left, capping a 12-play, 92-yard scoring drive to put the Bulldogs up 14. Georgia ended the night with three touchdown drives that went 84 yards or farther.
