Looking back at Josh Heupel’s Oklahoma career
Heupel was an All-American, finished second for the Heisman Trophy and was the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year in 2000, when he threw for 3,392 yards and 20 touchdowns, leading the Sooners to a perfect 13-0 season and a BCS National Championship.
He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Oklahoma in 2004 and was the quarterbacks coach for the Sooners from 2006-10 and added co-offensive coordinator duties from 2011-14.
Bob Stoops fired Heupel as Oklahoma’s co-offensive coordinator in January 2015, leading Heupel to stops at Utah State and Missouri as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.
He became a head coach for the first time in 2019 at Central Florida and followed athletic director Danny White to Tennessee in January 2021. Heupel is 26-12 in his third season as the head coach of the Vols.
