Volquest Recaps Tennessee's Win Against Chattanooga, Nico's Performance, Injury Updates & Nc State

Tennessee Football on Tuesday moved up three spots and is now ranked No. 12 in both the US LBM Coaches Poll and moved up one spot to No. 14 the Associated Press Top 25. The Vols were No. 15 in both preseason polls. They opened the season on Saturday with a 69-3 win over Chattanooga at Neyland Stadium. 

Now Tennessee (1-0) goes on the road to face North Carolina State (1-0) on Saturday night (7:30 Eastern Time, ABC) in the Duke’s Mayo Classic at Bank of American Stadium in Charlotte. 

N.C. State dropped three spots to No. 24 in the AP Top 25 and one spot to No. 23 in the Coaches Poll. The Wolfpack opened the season Thursday night with a 38-21 win over Western Carolina, scoring 21 unanswered points in the fourth quarter after trailing 21-17 in the third.

Vols had 718 yards of total offense in Week 1 vs. Chattanooga

Redshirt freshman quarterback Nico Iamaleava completed 22 of 28 passes for 314 yards and three touchdowns on Saturday against Chattanooga while making his first career start at Neyland Stadium. Iamaleava, who set a new program record with his 314 yards passing in a single half, did not play in the second half as the Vols began emptying the bench.

Junior running back Dylan Sampson carried 12 times for 124 yards and scored three times on the ground. Dont’e Thornton caught three pass for 105 yards and two touchdowns.

N.C. State quarterback Grayson McCall, the Coastal Carolina transfer, completed 26 of 40 passes for 318 yards, three touchdowns and an interception on Thursday night against Western Carolina at Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.

Jordan Waters led the Wolfpack on the ground with 20 carries for 123 yards and two touchdowns and Kevin Concepcion caught nine passes for 121 yards and three touchdowns. 

The game was tied at 14-14 at halftime before Western Carolina scored a touchdown to take a 21-17 lead, answering a 46-yard N.C. State field goal. The Wolfpack took over with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. 

Tennessee finished at No. 17 in the AP poll after going 9-4 last season, ending the year with a 35-0 win over No. 24 Iowa in the Citrus Bowl at Camping World Stadium in Orlando on New Year’s Day. The Vols were ranked No. 12 in the Preseason AP Top 25 a year ago, moved up to No. 11 after a 2-0 start then dropped 12 spots to No. 23 after the loss at Florida. 

The Vols started at No. 10 in the Preseason Coaches Poll a year ago, moved up to No. 9 in September and finished at No. 17 after the Citrus Bowl win.
