Ari Wasserman has Tennessee Football ranked No. 24 in On3’s Way-Too-Early Top 25 for the 2025 season, which he updated following the spring transfer portal window.

Tennessee made the most headlines during the spring window, after its public breakup with quarterback Nico Iamaleava. The Vols replaced Iamaleava with Joey Aguilar, who had transferred from Appalachian State to UCLA in December.

Aguilar left UCLA after Iamaleava committed to the Bruins.

“Tennessee got blindsided this spring when quarterback Nico Iamaleava left the program after an NIL dispute,” Wasserman wrote. “This team wasn’t one that was coming into the year as a national title dark horse, but the Volunteers needed to act fast to shore up the quarterback room.

“They landed UCLA transfer Joey Aguilar, who ironically lost the job he transferred from Appalachian State to take when Iamaleava chose the Bruins. Tennessee still has enough talent to be ranked.”

Four Tennessee opponents ranked in On3’s Way-Too-Early Top 25

Wasserman’s top five was No. 1 Penn State, No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 LSU. Next was Georgia, Notre Dame, Alabama, Oregon and Illinois, rounding out the top 10.

Other Tennessee opponents in the ranking included No. 11 Florida and No. 17 Oklahoma.

Penn State was also No. 1 in ESPN’s updated Way-Too-Early Top 25 last week. The Vols were not ranked in ESPN’s ranking, after coming in at No. 16 in January.

Tennessee’s updated win total for the 2025 season is set at 8.5, according to odds from FanDuel. The total for the Vols was previously 9.5, before losing Iamaleava to the portal.

Over 8.5 wins is -122 in the new odds while under 8.5 wins is +100. Tennessee also went from the eighth best odds to win a national championship, at +1800, to 12th, at +3000.
