Where Tennessee Football is ranked after the 33-14 win over Mississippi State
Tennessee jumped up two spots and is now ranked No. 4 in the updated Coaches Poll on Sunday, following the 33-14 win over Mississippi State Saturday night. The Associated Press Top 25 moved Tennessee up one spot to No. 6.
The Vols (8-1, 5-1 SEC) now go to Georgia (7-2, 5-2) for Saturday night’s 7:30 Eastern Time kickoff (TV: ABC) at Sanford Stadium in Athens. The Bulldogs dropped to No. 10 in the Coaches Poll and No. 11 in the AP Top 25 after losing 28-10 at Ole Miss on Saturday.
“Another SEC win,” Tennessee coach Josh Heupel said Saturday night during his postgame press conference. “A good win. Proud of the way the guys played for four quarters. Competed hard, played physical.”
Tennessee was ranked No. 7 in the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season last week. The Vols were seeded eighth in the 12-team bracket, which will be updated again Tuesday night.

Tennessee moved to first in the SEC standings after the win. Both the Vols and Texas A&M have 5-1 league records, but Tennessee is 8-1 overall while the Aggies are 7-2, with losses at South Carolina and at home against Notre Dame.
The Vols lost quarterback Nico Iamaleava to an upper-body injury at halftime against Mississippi State. Wide receiver Dont’e Thornton also left the game with an upper-body injury in the second half.
Iamaleava passed for 174 yards and two touchdowns in the first half and Thornton had three catches for 104 yards, including a 73-yard touchdown in the second quarter.

Heupel said after the game that he expects Iamaleava to be ready to play at Georgia.
“We anticipate having him ready for next week,” Heupel said. “So (it was a) precautionary measure at halftime. So feel like we’ll be ready to roll next Saturday.”
Where Tennessee Football has been ranked this season
Tennessee dropped to No. 8 in both the AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll after the 19-14 loss at Arkansas two weeks ago, falling from No. 4 in the AP poll and No. 5 in the Coaches Poll.
The Vols had made steady climbs in both rankings after lopsided wins over Chattanooga (69-3), North Carolina State (51-10) and Kent State (71-0) and the 25-15 win at Oklahoma.
The AP Poll moved Tennessee up to No. 14 in Week 2, No. 7 in Week 3, No. 6 in Week 4 and No. 5 two weeks ago. The Coaches Poll had the Vols at No. 12 in Week 2, No. 9 in Week 3, No. 7 in Week 4 and No. 6 two weeks ago.
Tennessee moved up one spot to No. 4 in both the AP Top 25 and the Coaches Poll the first open date of the season. The Vols started the year ranked No. 15 in both the Coaches Poll and the AP Top 25.
