Tennessee looking to add quarterback in spring portal window
Tennessee has been in the college football spotlight since late last week when Nico Iamaleava’s contract negotiations for a new NIL deal were reported by On3’s Pete Nakos. The negotiations turned into Iamaleava not showing at practice Friday morning, then not being in contact with Tennessee coaches throughout the day.
Heupel told his team Saturday morning that the Vols were moving on from Iamaleava as their quarterback, leaving Tennessee now looking to add a quarterback from the NCAA Transfer Portal to go with redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and freshman George MacIntyre.
“This program is ready to go win next fall,” Heupel said Saturday afternoon after Tennessee’s Orange & White Game. “And as a program since we’ve been here, we’ve won with a lot of different QB’s done it historically in my career with a lot of different QBs.
“Some of those guys have been older, some of them have been younger, but we’ll have a quarterback that’s ready to go win and help us compete for a championship.”
